Chapters 4-7
Perspective of Jem
School was dragging along slowly. The summer was on its way and that meant Dill was coming back. One strange thing was that Scout kept finding stuff in this tree on the Radley’s yard. There was a hole in the tree and someone kept putting stuff there. First scout found some gum that I thought could be poisonous. At first I didn’t believe she found it in a tree, then on the last day of school we were walking home and she pointed out the tree to tell me that’s where she found the chewing gum and there was something else in it. I pulled it out and we both ran to our porch. We sat down and we opened the little box covered with chewing gum wrappers. We were both surprised at the contents of the box. There were two polished pennies in there. We both didn’t know what to do whether to keep them or to show them around school, when it started again, to see if it was anybody’s. Two days after we found the box Dill came. We were going to play Tom and Sam and Dick but everyone was tired of that so we didn’t know what to play. Then scout asked me to make up another play. She doesn’t realize that I am really tired of making them up. Then we decided to roll in the tire. I didn’t know that Jem was mad at me for contradicting him on his explanation of Hot Steams so when he pushed me I could tell. He pushed me a bit hard and I didn’t know where I had landed. I lifted my head up and there I was in the Radley’s yard. I was so scared that I got up and jolted out of the yard not even bothering to get the tire. Jem had to get it because he wasn’t afraid, or so he said.
