Chapter Title: Beast From Air
My Title: There Is No Beast
Perspective: Simon
What sign comes down from the grown up world?
The so-called sign is a dead aviator. Everyone thinks that it is a sign but a dead person is a weird sign. I don’t think it is a sign and no one else should but their imagination is taking over their perception of reality.
Why aren’t the boys aware of it?
Ralph and Jack aren’t aware because they are always embroiled. Jack is always waxy; he is always out to get someone. They can’t take one minute to see what’s happening instead of arguing. Also Piggy doesn’t realize because he is caught up in trying to get his point through.
Why are Sam ‘n Eric so terrified?
Mutinously they told us that they are the ones who first saw the “beast” which was the dead pilot. Their imagination took over and they thought he was a beast when he was hanging from his parachute.
How do Sam ‘n Eric describe the beast?
They think that he had wings and claws and fangs. They said he looked very scary but they couldn’t really see because it was dark. I think all their talk is a bunch of guano. They are just making it up.
What is the attitude of the boys when going off to look for the beast?
Jack got way too excited when we went to look for the beast. He really wants to kill it but I think he also wants to feel the power of killing. He is getting way to caught up in hunting and forgetting about real life back home. He doesn’t even want to be rescued.
Is there really a beast? How do you know?
I don’t think there is a beast because there are no such things as beasts. I think that is just everyone’s imagination is being toyed with by themselves. They all see what they want to see. The beast isn’t real but everyone thinks it is.
What do you think the actual beast that all of the boys are so afraid of really is?
I think that they are just scared of never being rescued. Also I think they are afraid of the savages inside them, especially Jack.
These people are getting carried away and they forget about trying to get rescued. The stay on this island feels interminable.
